The designer story
Yogi is a sustainable clothing line that focuses on revival of raw fibre and indigenous textiles by creating weaves and handwork using local material and skill.
Our new collection, the Spring Summer 18, ‘Life in Technicolor’ brings an early electronic gaming era on old world cotton plant, where both of them disappeared in the course of time. The weaves and hand-work on cotton are inspired by the elements from the 1990’s, 8-bit pixelated video games like Mario, Contra, Space Invaders creating a synergy between the local and the digital world.
Coming from an Architectural background I was always intrigued by earthy traditional structures and the pure organic nature of form. Trying to find light in the obscurity of today’s urban and concrete labyrinth, comfort was always found within sustainable and climate response built forms. Finishing my Architectural education I slowly shifted my base to sustainable product design. During this time we had few site visits to the rural parts of Gujarat and in no time I could see myself getting inclined towards the native textiles and handmade nature of the fabric made in that particular region. Gradually we collaborated with the weavers from the Bhuj district for their homegrown art and handlooms. With limited funds we started working with a NGO and a weaver family that helped us in executing our own designs on desi cotton weaves with the power of handloom.
