Curator's note
The glossy brownish-black glaze on the Tapering Oval Vase is inspired from an oriental glaze called tenmoku. The small golden specks on the pot is referred to as the tea dust effect. It is the result of natural cooling of the kiln post a reduction firing.
Microwave, dishwasher safe.
Stoneware claybody fired in reduction to 1285 °C.
Hand thrown on the potters wheel and altered subsequently.
Each piece is manually glazed, hence each piece will have its own unique appearance.
The designer story
As an architect turned potter, I am drawn towards making a pot on the wheel – forms that bring out the softness of the medium and being able to alter it and play with a simple shape. At Kalimann Studio, we make high fired stoneware, mostly functional pots that are subtly playful and understated. Our products are wheel thrown and hand built, and we try to use local materials as slips and part of glazes. Most of the pots are made on the wheel, for which I use a light coloured stoneware body that comes from Gujarat, India.
