THE DESIGNER STORY
AKIHI is the state of illimitable and instinctive pursuit. It speaks of the journey one takes to find oneself within the many layers of the self. It is the detachment from worldviews and ideas in order to pave one's own path and make one's own meanings.
The label, AKIHI was conceptualized by Srishti Arora, along the same belief when she embarked upon a journey to find an exceptional wearable expression for traditional Indian embroideries. As a trained textile designer, Srishti has forever been enthralled by local textiles and embroideries of Jaipur, but wanted to find an offbeat avenue to showcase them. A lot of soul-searching ensued till she struck upon the idea of crafting jewelry pieces that were adorned with embroideries and fabrics instead of gemstones.
Silk acts as the canvas on which Srishti designs a medley of textures using beads and threads twined together with intricate stitches, which is then mounted on a gold plated brass frame, transforming a piece of fabric into jewelry. The development is meticulous and requires intense precision to execute. Each piece passes through several hands- from the silk dyer, to the embroiderer to the metal-smith. They work at it unhurriedly to ensure that the delicacy remains intact at each stage, for no two pieces can be the same, given the acquiescent nature of fabric. What is created is at the end of the process, is not just an ornament, but a tangible testimony of our craft heritage repurposed in a contemporary fashion.
The romance of the craftsmen with their materials is imprinted not only on each AKIHI piece but also on the ethos of our label and we hope to glorify and keep alive the soul of the 'handmade' through our endeavours and your patronage.
